Spanish Cataloging

The increasing size, accessibility and inadequacy of records on Spanish language collections have long represented a challenge to librarians. Until now the limited size of Spanish language collections in most libraries has always allowed patrons to shelf-browse titles of interest. Often these titles occupied only a few feet of shelf space. With the increased demand for Spanish language collections and multi-branch systems, more libraries are making room, policies, and improving collections to attract and satisfy their Spanish speaking patrons. Many libraries across the entire country are ranking their community interests very high in their title selection profile. Here at Brodart we place great emphasis on meeting these new demands.

The extensive editing and creation of Spanish language records is costly and time consuming for libraries. However it is necessary to meet the ever-growing needs of Spanish speaking patrons. Many libraries have catalogs that are largely inaccessible to non-bilingual patrons and some have only minimally useful cataloging. The quality of service and access for patrons wanting Spanish materials continues to be a concern for librarians.

Brodart Cataloging

Although Brodart custom cataloging uses OCLC for select Compleat Book-Serv customers, we do not use it for our Spanish program. Some of the records can be acquired via Library of Congress, but most books require original cataloging done with book-in-hand.

All our cataloging is done in-house by specialized Spanish language catalogers. With the book-in-hand we verify and edit a Library of Congress bibliographic record or create an original MARC format bibliographic record that adheres to national standards. We analyze the item to verify or assign classification and subject headings.

Notes

One of the primary omissions in descriptive cataloging are the notes presented with it. Often records for original Spanish language books have notes and title fields that are either empty or filled with an English equivalent. Notes often provide enough information about the item to convey what it is about, the tone of the item and often makes it easier for the patron to decide whether to examine the item or not. Having as many access points on a record as possible, such as subject headings in Spanish, also helps the patron in their decision process to examine an item.

Records

Brodart's automated catalog product is delivered in machine-readable format per your local specifications, provided changes in our standard record all can be made programmatically.

We FTP our cataloging records to match your book shipments and 3.5" diskettes are also available via mail for data output. This applies to both standard cataloging and custom cataloging.
